Octopus City Blues aims to simulate a real Octopus City and to allow customers to assume the role of Kaf Kafkaryan, a lowly tentacle cutter living in a city built around a giant Octopus. This blog chronicles the development progress and contains various articles and resources found in the ruins of a real Octopus City.
Abstract
In this paper we develop a working model to examine the narrative elements underlying the story of Kaf Kafkaryan. Our methodology contrasts contemporary sources and later findings. While little is known about Kaf, what we do know was enough to inspire an entire genre of Octopus City books, movies, games, and simulations. Kaf Kafkaryan has been transformed from an obscure name mentioned in documents found in the Octopus City ruins into a legendary character that is often associated with the Octopus City mythos as a whole.

Introduction
The discovery of the Octopus City ruins in Samarduk has resulted in a lot of excitement and interest in Tentacology in popular media. While not much is known about the culture of Octopus City and the majority of popular depictions are faulty (with the exception of Octopus City Blues, the most authentic Octopus City simulation currently being developed by our gracious sponsors Ghost in a Bottle Corp.), a lot of the published literature focuses on Kaf Kafkaryan, an enigmatic figure whose unusual name pops up in some of the documents retrieved from the ruins. One of the reasons for the interest in Kaf might lie in the fact that we don’t know the names of any other inhabitant of the city. The reasons for this are unclear but the few surviving records only mention Kaf, and it is theorized that the other documents have been deliberately destroyed or tampered with.
Kaf: The Facts
So who exactly is Kaf Kafkaryan? We know that he is a lowly tentacle cutter who lived in Gold Tower in the early years of the 13th century AU. We also know that tentacle cutting was a very ignoble profession whose practitioners were shunned and ridiculed. Oddly enough, we find that Kaf lived with his wheelchair-bound mother in a nice apartment in Upper Gold Tower, a district inhabited by middle-to-high-income families. This has led some writers to speculate that Kaf had had a successful life once. We also know that he was somewhat involved in a weird series of events that completely transformed Octopus City.
Octopus City
To give readers some context, Octopus City of the 13th century was the only remaining octopus city in the world. The planet was undergoing a strange phenomenon that is sometimes called the Blizzard or the Toxic Ice Age. A fierce global snowstorm that raged for hundreds of years; even if they survived the piercing cold, those exposed to the storm would eventually go mad or die. Octopus cities provided warmth and protection against the storm, but they were very hard to maintain and all the other ‘octopuses’ died eventually. The octopus at Octopus City was artificially kept alive with complex steam machines. By doing that, the engineers of Octopus City were able to extend its live for many decades, but they lost control of the Octopus in the process; its tentacles started spreading in all directions and people reported having weird dreams. People who drank the blood of the octopus found it hard to escape these dreams and some of them started a cult centered around the practice.
The city was originally divided into eight towers built around the massive tentacles of the Octopus. Each tower had a specific function initially, but after the rebellion and subsequent destruction of the Processing Tower, the Central Administration moved away from specialization in favor of keeping towers self-sufficient. Towers were operated by subcontractors led by powerful nobles, known as Magistrates, who reported directly to the leading triumvirate. Corruption and crime were widespread and powerful gangs and noble families dominated the political scene behind a democratic veneer. Ethnic tensions were always a problem with the Cappies, Dukes, and Goons fighting for control of the Octopus.
Kaf: The Myth
People like to identify with a hero, and while it’s hard to find any hard evidence linking Kaf to the changes that happened to Octopus City, a lot of theories cast him as either the savior of the city or its worst enemy. The truth is probably less exciting, but the Kaf myth has its own allure and has spread beyond the field of Tentacology and into public imagination. In some versions, Kaf is a revolutionary who stood up against an oppressive regime and corrupt aristocracy, in others he is a mad cultist who offered the blood of his enemies to the Octopus. Sometimes he is linked to events that happened before he was born, such as the Great War or the Machine Rebellion, while other legends claim that he lives to this day.
Conclusion
In this paper we have reviewed the facts and myths regarding Kaf Kafkaryan and his role in Octopus City. While the legends are not based on real findings, there is still hope in finding out what really happened at Octopus City and who Kaf really is. This is thanks to the efforts of the Ghost in a Bottle Enterprises imagineers and their recent announcement that their upcoming Octopus City simulation is based on newly found evidence. This evidence reportedly casts more light on Kaf Kafkaryan and the bizarre chain of events that he helped set off.
